Variations in the number of pulmonary veins draining into left atrium and its clinical significance

چکیده

Background: Pulmonary veins, normally two on each side bring oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium. During early embryonic life, absorption of pulmonary venous network by the left primitive atrial chamber results in opening of four pulmonary veins which drain independently into its chamber. The extent of absorption and hence, the number of pulmonary veins which open into left atrium may vary. Objective: The study was done to observe the variation in the number of pulmonary veins opening in the left atrium. Materials and method: The present study was done on 30 formalin fixed hearts of unknown age and sex which were obtained from the department of anatomy, Government medical college, Chandigarh. These hearts were observed for the variations in pulmonary ostia on right and left sides and were compared on both sides and also with the earlier data. Results: In 8 (26.67%) out of these 30 hearts, variations were observed in the number of pulmonary veins and ostia either on one side or on both sides of the left atrium. 22 hearts (73.33%) out of 30 hearts had normal pulmonary veins which opened into left atrium via two separate pulmonary ostia, on either side. Conclusion: Knowledge of number of pulmonary veins and their ostia locations is important to ensure that all ostia are ablated, as ectopic foci may go untreated in variant veins.

Variations in the pulmonary venous ostium in the left atrium and its clinical importance.

INTRODUCTION During early embryonic development, absorption of pulmonary venous network by the left primitive atrial chamber results in opening of four pulmonary veins which drain independently into its chamber. The extent of absorption and hence, the number of pulmonary veins which open into the left atrium, may vary. As only few studies have been done, which have shown such variations, the pr...

Persistent left superior vena cava draining the pulmonary veins.

Persistence of the left superior vena cava is not uncommon in children with congenital heart disease and is occasionally found in adults at thoracotomy. The anomalous vena cava usually carries venous blood from the upper part of the body to the right atrium via the coronary sinus and has little functional significance. In the four patients we describe, however, the left superior vena cava drain...

Left Atrial Drainage of a Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava

Although the most common form of the persistent left superior vena cava anomaly is usually clinically silent and often discovered incidentally, the risk of developing cyanosis, heart failure, and embolic cerebrovascular events is high among cases where the anomaly causes a right to left shunt. A rare case of persistent left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium through the superior l...

Persistent left superior vena cava

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common congenital malformation of thoracic venous return and is present in 0.3 to 0.5% of individuals in the general population. This heart specimen was dissected from a 35-year-old male cadaver whose cause of death was determined as non-cardiac. The heart was examined and we found a PLSVC draining into the coronary sinus. The right superio...

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection draining into the portal vein in a 2-month-old infant: multidetector computed tomography angiography diagnosis

Early diagnosis and surgical correction is highly important for survival. In the evaluation of TAPVC, imaging methods have been used. Recent advances Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly in which the pulmonary veins fail to connect with the left atrium and connect directly to the right atrium or to one of the systemic veins. Early diagnosis an...
